One of my favorite parts of the whole holiday season is spending time with friends and family. It seems like people are always dropping in to say hello so I like to have a guest ready home for those unexpected visits. You don’t have to have a perfectly clean and party ready house, but a few simple touches will make a big impact on the warmth and hospitality of your home. Keep it simple and make it easy for yourself to feel prepared about having people stop by at a moment’s notice.
1 – Welcome!
This first thing someone will see when stepping inside is often the mat by the door. I love having a seasonal welcome mat to greet my guests as they take off their shoes and enter my home. As an added bonus, it keeps the floors relatively clean during the messy Canadian winter. This one from Wayfair.ca is so cute and I love the different green trees! Our house is green so I feel like this would be perfect.
2 – Nom Nom!
If someone surprises you or gives you 5 minutes notice, you’re definitely not going to have time to whip up the perfect hostess platters of food. The next best thing is having a few easy snacks at the ready and a festive bowl to put them in. Your guests will think you had something prepared just for them! Something as simple as a bowl of cashews or mixed nuts, some classic Quality Street chocolates or some yummy caramel popcorn is perfect and quick to grab in a hurry.
3 – Time for Tea
I always have a nice selection of tea and coffee hanging around my cupboards to begin with because that’s just how I roll but it sure comes in handy when friends pop by for a cup! There’s something so warm and welcoming about a nice cup of tea and I give bonus points if there are a few to choose from. If you follow my Instagram, you know I’m a huge fan of the selection at David’s Tea. A spicy chai or a fresh peppermint are great options for this time of year but plain ol’ orange pekoe always does the trick. And let’s be honest, a splash of Bailey’s in some coffee never hurt anyone’s feelings either!
4 – Smells Like Christmas
There’s always that special scent that reminds you of the holiday season. For me, the smell of pine trees brings me right back to decorating the Christmas tree as a kid. I also love the smell of anything delicious that might be baking and I’ve been known to light a scented candle to make people think I’ve been slaving in kitchen all day. I have a slight addiction to Scentsy wax bars and Sticky Cinnamon Bun has always been a favorite of mine but some people prefer something a little more subtle and Simply Vanilla is a great choice. If you want a little prezzie for yourself in addition to a yummy smelling candle, you can’t go wrong with Christmas Wreath or even Maple Bacon from Jewelry in Candles. A great scent AND some pretty jewelry!
Something as simple as festive napkins can make a big impact in setting you up as the hostess with the mostest! Since I am my mother’s daughter, I always appreciate a fun napkin and it’s adds a special touch to make your guests feel like you’re bringing out the good stuff just for them. The same goes for nice hand towels in the bathroom. I won’t lie, my family gets the plain hand towels but I bring out the nice ones for guests. I love these funny drunk deer hand towels from Wayfair.ca!
It doesn’t take a great deal of preparation to have your house guest ready in no time! A few basic items kept on hand will pay off for you in the long run so you don’t feel like you weren’t ready for a drop in guest. Wayfair.ca has the perfect selection of holiday deals and it’s definitely worth a look if you want to stock up. Keep these host basics around so you’re always ready to welcome friends into your home this holiday season!
