A few years ago, I never would have gone to a blog conference. I have had various blogs over the past 10 plus years but the thought of actually calling myself a blogger seemed a little weird since I wasn’t exactly open about it. I started HappyPrettyBlog back in 2012 and I’ve only been talking about it freely for about the past year. Blogging is way more common today, but it’s still really foreign to some people. I can remember my mom being pretty skeptical about it because she felt like blogs were just online diaries. Some are, of course, but most aren’t anymore even though lots of them started out that way. Back on topic!
If you follow me on Instagram you might have seen a post about BlogJam Atlantic that took place in Halifax, Nova Scotia on November 5. It’s a blog conference for bloggers in Atlantic Canada to come together, learn how to grow ourselves and our blogs, and just have a great time networking and seeing each other face to face. This was it’s 3rd year running but my 1st time attending and my only regret is not hearing about it sooner!
I think the coolest part for me was being able to actually have a conversation with people in person who do the same things that I do. Blogging can be lonely sometimes because you pretty much work alone all the time and it can often feel like you’re talking to yourself with little to no feedback. Talking with people who get it is so cool! Especially since I don’t have many people in my life who actually know what I do. I’m not going to lie, I was really nervous. Like, almost backed out nervous. This whole thing is pretty out of my comfort zone and I went into it not knowing a soul. But I met some really awesome people! I was lucky enough to meet the gorgeous Amanda from DotDotDot which is an inspiring look at wellness and Holly from Holly’s Housewife Life which is a sweet beauty / mama blog. Thanks for the chats, ladies!
In addition to meeting people, I learned a LOT! The hardest part was choosing which sessions to go to because there were 3 sessions happening at the same time and ALL of them sounded awesome. I learned so much about Google Analytics from Alison Knott, SEO from Taylor Bare, avoiding burnout from Kayla Short, social media from Anita Kirkbride, travel writing from Tiffany Thornton, creativity from Heather Clarke & Lori Byrne, and Facebook giveaways from Amanda Mac. I took a ton of notes and have been reading them over and over ever since I got back home. It’s very cool to put some of the things I’ve learned into motion and start seeing results!
My biggest takeaway from the whole weekend is that I CAN do it! I CAN do something new all by myself. I CAN improve my blog and my life. I CAN make this my job. I CAN be a professional blogger! I’ve had so much motivation and so many ideas floating around in my head that I’m excited to get down to work. I’m also very excited because I actually won something! Fujifilm was one of the event sponsors and I won a Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 Instant Camera in Cobalt Blue which was so awesome because I’ve been wanting one of these things forever!
As you can probably tell, I had a blast and I can’t wait to go to the BlogJam blog conference again next year! It makes me want to go to more events like this one and really own my little corner of the web and what I’m doing with it.
