May has been a very busy month for our family with the addition of some new family members. We got Pixel the kitten and a few weeks later, we added 5 chicks to our funny farm! Some people think I’m crazy, and maybe I am, but I’m hoping to give the kids a love an appreciation for animals and some memories along the way. That, and eggs aren’t cheap so once these girls start laying I’ll be saving a few dollars on groceries! I’m not joking, the boys can eat 5 eggs some days and that adds up!
I did lots of reading and watched many YouTube videos in the months leading up to getting our 5 feathered friends. I tried to learn as much as I could so that I could provide everything that they need to be happy and healthy little chicks. It was kind of like reading all of those books when I was pregnant only these things seemed much more useful!
Before bringing them home, I made sure to have all of the supplies ready. I got their food and water dishes along with their chick starter food, and Nick and I made a nice brooder for them to live in until they are ready to go outside in the chicken coop. It didn’t cost much and didn’t take much time or effort to get their cozy new home all prepared and ready for them. Then all we had to do was wait until they were ready to be picked up!
We were all so excited when the chicks finally arrived!
5 fuzzy, yellow, babies that were chirping and hopping all over the place! Ben was a bit confused since he knows that we eat chicken so I had to explain to him that these would be our pet chickens and that they will lay eggs for us to eat. So naturally, as 3 year olds do, he explained to everyone who came to see our new chicks that we got chickens but they’re not to eat! He was very concerned that people might think otherwise.
So far, having our pet chicks has been great! They are so sweet and fun to watch. I’m the type of person who can watch fish swim around their tank for hours and the same goes for these chicks. I can’t tell them all apart yet so we haven’t officially named them but we do have a few names in mind. Some parents reading might recognize a few of them. So far we have Nugget because we’re sadistic like that, Chickaletta from Paw Patrol and Deputy Peck from Sheriff Callie. We need 2 more and I’m thinking Chicken Licken and Henny Penny but I welcome all and any suggestions! I’m sure there are people out there who are much more creative and clever than I am!
Here’s a video if you’d like to follow along with the chicks on YouTube.
