I have been incredibly fortunate in my mothering career to have been able to breastfeed both of my boys. Although Alex has recently stopped nursing, I feel like that 4 and a half years of nourishing my children with my body has given me some sort of authority on the subject. Speaking from extensive experience, I have some tips and recommendations for new and soon to be mamas out there. Let’s start with the trusty nursing bra!
I’ve recommended a book about breastfeeding and talked about what to do when mastitis strikes in the past and today I want to stress the importance of proper support. Get it … support … I’ll stop now. In all seriousness, a properly fitting bra is important at the best of times but especially so when you are nursing. I can tell you from experience that if you are wearing a bra that is too tight or constricting you in some way, that could be a blocked duct waiting to happen.
I can tell you from experience that if you are wearing a bra that is too tight or restricting you in some way, that could be a blocked duct waiting to happen. Not to mention possibly disrupting milk flow. No one wants mastitis, I can tell you that. As if you’re not already uncomfortable enough after just having a new baby! A well fitting nursing bra can keep things where they should without being too tight.
In addition to proper fit, a good nursing bra is made for comfort in mind. I won’t lie, the girls are going to be sensitive. Very sensitive. Seams down the middle or a more textured fabric may not bother you normally, but those will seem like sandpaper to your poor sore nips. You will feel aches and pains that you didn’t think were possible and an uncomfortable bra doesn’t have to add to it.
There are some awesome options out there for new mamas at a variety of price points. I definitely would recommend getting at LEAST one high-quality nursing bra if nothing else. Even if you don’t leave the house often and are happy with cheap and cheerful nursing bras for daily life, you will truly appreciate having a great bra when you have the chance to escape the nest for a few minutes and you don’t want titties popping out everywhere! I’m going to give you a few recommendations below so you’ve got an idea of where to start if you’re in the market for a nursing bra.
ThirdLove just came out with their fabulous new nursing bra. Their bras are gorgeous and they can even help you find your perfect fit. They have also been kind enough to offer 10% off to my readers so use the code TLJLY10 to get in on that!
Hotmilk has a great selection of nursing bras. Ones for sports, sleeping, nursing pads, and more. Worth a look!
I’m an Amazon Prime whore and you can find pretty much anything there so of course nursing bras are no exception. There aren’t as many high-quality ones, but definitely a few to get you through those rough days and nights when you don’t know whether you’re coming or going. I had a few of these and liked them.
Something like this is also very comfortable for sleeping in and is very affordable. I will warn you though, you’ll probably wake up with at least one boob hanging out.
If you don’t see your favourite, let me know your nursing bra of choice in the comments!
