Hey fans, it’s been a while since I’ve actually sat down and wrote something for the blog, despite telling myself that I would make a better effort to give Kim a hand this year with everything she’s got going on! As you’re all aware by now, our little Boo Boo Bear, the great and all powerful Benny Larry, supreme ruler of the Tobin-verse is now a year old and walking around (for real, yo) like he owns the place (and he does!).
I’ve had a few ideas floating around inside my mind palace that I thought would be a good post to start the year off. Unfortunately, my mind is like a labyrinth and I could never pick one thing to focus on. Tonight’s run in with my son’s bedtime routine sealed the deal, so I present to you Good Cop, Bad Cop starring Nicholas and Kimberley Tobin!
During the week, Kim stays home with Ben while I’m at work (and really, if you’re a stay at home mom, kudos to you, it’s more work than what I go through on a daily basis!) and when I get home, we enjoy a nice supper as a family. After supper, I get to play good cop for a little while and take Ben in for his bath. I’d talk about how much Ben loves the bath but that would be a whole post! After that, that’s when I get to play Bad Cop and Kim gets to play good cop.
Ben’s general love for the bath is trumped by his hatred for getting out of the bathtub. Well, he used to kick and scream bloody murder when I took him out of the bath. Now, he’s usually fine, because he gets a visit from the good cop to get his teeth brush. Tada! Mommy here to save the day! I realize how fortunate it is for us that Ben loves to have his teeth brushed but he knows that after his bath, his mommy is going to brush his teeth.
What’s next you ask? Another Bad Cop moment for Daddy, where Ben has to get his diaper on, lotioned up and into his jammies. He dislikes having to lay down for me to get him ready for bed, especially if he’s not allowed to eat the bottles of lotion, flip on his stomach or sit up. So, once he’s ready for bed, he gets brought to the Good Cop to get his nightly dose of boobie.
Now, tonight was a shining example of the fact that Ben has Kim as the Good Cop and me as the Bad. After his nightly dose of boobie, Kim and Ben will usually sit on the couch and she’ll attempt (usually unsuccessfully) to get Ben to sleep. The rule of thumb being, if he sits there, stays quiet and snuggles to sleep, he gets to stay with Mommy. If he starts acting up, he has to come with the big bad daddy! Well, tonight was one of those acting up night. Ben was crawling all over Kim, giving her kisses and having himself a jolly good time. Once I entered the living room, he just… stared at me before kissing Kim some more, saying mum over and over again while burying his head in the couch. He’d turn around, look at me, laugh, and back his face would go into the couch. Of course, once I finally took him, he kicked up a fuss before we finally sat on the couch and I snuggled him to sleep.
Overall, Kim’s more Good Cop and I’m more Bad Cop, but that doesn’t stop either one of us assuming the other role. I mean, once I got Ben on the couch to snuggle, I made sure to make him laugh and smile and remind him I love him before going back to my mean old ways and getting him to sleep.
Kim’s Note: Sleep training & Parenting Nazis, don’t bother telling us we’re doing it all wrong. We know. We prefer our own way of attachment style parenting and it works for our family. We’re happy. It’s wonderful if cry it out worked for you and I think that’s great! We’re ALL good parents, even if our methods differ!
