Between my 2 kids, I have been breastfeeding for almost 3 years now. In those 3 years I have found that there are a few things that just make the whole thing a lot easier for me. Let’s face it, anything that can make breastfeeding easier is something to consider trying because if you’ve done it you’ll know that it can come with many challenges! Anyone who says that breastfeeding comes naturally or is easy is lying to you. It becomes easy, but takes work and a few helpful supplies.
Here are my recommendations of items I like to use that are helpful in making breastfeeding easier and more enjoyable for me. Yes, at this point I do find breastfeeding to be an enjoyable experience but it wasn’t always that way!
A good nursing pillow is so great for getting into a good feeding position and keeping Mama & Baby comfortable. This helps get a better latch which is so very crucial to avoid nipple pain and help your baby nurse as effectively as possible. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just a simple C shaped pillow that wraps around your front and sides will do. Here are a few that I like.
As if we need an excuse to go shopping, am I right? A well fitting nursing bra will make breastfeeding much more comfortable and convenient for you. You’re going to want to wait until you’re very close to the end of your pregnancy or after your baby is born because your boobs will be out of control. A bra that you buy at the beginning of your pregnancy probably won’t fit when the time comes for you to actually use it. Dem titties doe.
This is especially important at the beginning of your breastfeeding experience until your nipples become accustomed to this new adventure. Unless your partner enjoys preparing you for things like these, ahem. I’ll warn you, this stuff can be thick and a bit greasy so be aware that you’ll probably want something to wipe your fingers on after you use it. A receiving blanket full of baby puke works wonders!
Easy access clothing is a MUST because you must be able to whip your boobs out at a moment’s notice. Wearing clothing designed for a breastfeeding mother will make it easier and you’ll eliminate the risk of flashing everyone in viewing distance. I always find that wearing a nursing top allows me to breastfeed very discreetly while in public because as I wrote about before, I do not hide to breastfeed and believe in feeding my child anywhere he needs to be fed.
Finally, nursing pads are a great thing to have because no one likes leaking all over themselves, right? Some people like re-usable ones, some prefer disposable, some just stuff their bra with baby facecloths. I can tell you from experience that there’s nothing quite like someone else pointing out that you’re leaking so avoid it if you can. I’ve tried many kinds and prefer a thin disposable nursing pad but try a few and find one that works well for you!
So there are my must have items for making breastfeeding your new baby and easier and more comfortable experience! Breastfeeding mamas, what products would you add to this list?
