Hi, all! I’m trying to get back to business here and let me tell you, the struggle is real! If you’re a longtime and devoted reader (HA!) you’ve probably noticed a bit of an absence going on. Call it writer’s block, laziness, lack of motivation. Whatever it is, I am ready to get past it.
So here’s the struggle.
I need a good routine that works for the boys and I. Flying by the seat of my pants like I usually do just isn’t working in a way that’s productive for me or them. We had a big wrench thrown into things a little over a month ago when I broke my collarbone which really threw off any semblance of a daily routine. Nick had to take a lot of time off work to take care of all of us when I was out of commission and while it was so nice to have him home with us, it definitely threw us for a loop. He went back to work last week and since then, I’ve had a really strong desire to get back to work.
Up until this point, I haven’t been happy with my performance as a mom or as a blogger. I found myself playing on my phone, TV on all day, the boys fighting and whining until I gave in and handed over their tablets. I never wanted to be the kind of mother who relied on those things all the time. I’m a techie so I certainly don’t mind them having those things at some point throughout the day for a little while as a bit of down time. It’s the all-day thing that bothers me. If you’ve got toddlers (mine are 4 and 2) you know exactly what I mean by the whining. Oh. My. God. The. Whining! If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen this picture. It accurately depicts what things look like when I try to work.
Like I said, the struggle is real.
BUT I know what I want to change and how I would like things to go so that’s half the battle! Here’s how I would like our daily routine to go: Nick and the kids come wake me up at 7:30 (he gets up with them and does breakfast because he’s a morning person and I am not). I shower and get all 3 of us dressed and ready for the day. We head downstairs for a little snuggle and play time. I go into my office (right off the play room) and work for an hour or 2, depending on how the boys are behaving. TV can be on as long as they’re not sitting on the couch staring at it the entire time. Head back upstairs for lunch! Eat and clean up then head outside, weather permitting. Spend the afternoon outside if it’s nice or read books/play games together if it’s not. Go inside to start supper and tablet time for the boys.
Obviously, that’s a rough outline but you get the drift! Today is Day 1 of trying out the new routine and so far it’s going well. Everything has gone smoothly up until this point and since I’ve started writing this post I’ve only had one interruption which was quickly resolved by giving a snack. I know that not every day will be smooth and I won’t always be able to follow the plan but that’s ok! As long as we happily get through most days and I still get a few things done along the way, I’ll consider it a win! Motherhood isn’t meant to be perfect. Check back soon and see how things are going. I’d love to do an update!
What do your days look like? Do you have a routine that works for you?
