Have you ever watched those decorating shows on HGTV and for some reason the designers always seem to find the best stuff from thrift stores? Then whenever you go to a thrift store it’s always the same musty smelling, old lady crap. I usually feel that way too.
It wasn’t until very recently that I started having some success with thrift store decor shopping. I’m pretty good at spotting bigger label clothing items like the Bench jackets I got for my sister in law and I but home decor seems to be a tougher nut to crack. Imagine my excitement when I spotted these beauties on the bottom shelf of the souvenir mug section. I saw some hipster eyeing them from further down the aisle so I had to duck under a man checking out a dumb looking Niagra Falls plate to get to them first. She clearly wouldn’t appreciate them as much as I would!
I had no idea where I was going to put them but my little magpie self just had to have their shiny goodness when I saw that the price tag said $2.99 for the set of 4! They are a lovely brassy bronzey type colour and who doesn’t love a good mason jar mug? What a perfect pairing! Once I got them home I decided to put them up on a shelf in my kitchen that I am having a hard time styling. Apparently the shelves are made of 100 year old wood or something so when I requested them in the offer we put on the house, the sellers made sure to let us know that they were very important and expensive or something. As if it was my problem that they spent a boat load of money on some old wood … but anyway.
Although I still think the shelf is missing a little je ne sais quoi, I’m happy with the look of my thrifting catch of the day. I thought I could possibly add seasonal type plants and decor to the jars throughout the year or add something in behind them but I’m not quite sure what. Suggestions?
